Stacked Stone Fountain

20242 weekends

A recirculating stacked-stone fountain built from fieldstone sourced at a local quarry. The sound alone was worth the project.

I wanted moving water in the garden. Not a pond — too much maintenance — but something that made sound, something that drew the eye. A recirculating fountain felt right: self-contained, low-maintenance once it's running, and endlessly adjustable.

The stone came from a local quarry that sells fieldstone by the pound. I spent an afternoon there picking through the pile, looking for pieces that would stack with some stability. Flat-bottomed stones, irregular tops, nothing too round. Ended up with about 200 pounds of material for a fountain that's roughly 30 inches tall.

The basin is a 20-gallon plastic reservoir buried flush with the ground, lined with a pond liner for extra insurance. The pump sits at the bottom and pushes water up through a half-inch tube hidden inside the stone stack. Getting the tube positioned so it's invisible from every angle took more patience than the stacking itself.

Stacking the stones dry first was the right move. I spent a full afternoon arranging and rearranging before I committed to mortar. The mortar joints are minimal — just enough to lock the key stones in place. The weight of the stack does most of the work. First time I turned on the pump and water started sheeting down the sides, I stood there for ten minutes just listening.

Lessons learned

  • Dry-stack first — commit to mortar only after you're happy with the arrangement
  • Bury the basin flush with grade so it disappears
  • A 400 GPH pump is the minimum for a satisfying flow rate
