Copper & Wood Lanterns

20232 weekends

Hand-bent copper frames, cedar panels, warm Edison glow. Made six of them. Kept two, gave four away.

I wanted outdoor lighting that didn't look like it came from a catalog. The idea was simple: a lantern frame bent from copper sheet, with cedar panels as diffusers, and an Edison bulb inside. Simple enough to make multiples, interesting enough to be worth making.

The copper bending was the learning curve. I bought a cheap sheet metal brake from the harbor freight and it worked fine for 90-degree bends, but the corner joints needed to be soldered. I hadn't soldered anything since high school electronics class. The first two joints were embarrassing. By the sixth, I had it.

The cedar panels were the easy part — ripped to width on the table saw, sanded to 220, finished with a water-based exterior finish. The warm color of the cedar against the copper is exactly what I was going for. I applied a liver of sulfur patina to the copper to age it — it went from bright penny to dark bronze in about 20 minutes.

Wiring six lanterns for outdoor use meant using outdoor-rated wire and waterproof wire nuts at every connection. I mounted them on the pergola posts and ran the wire through the posts to a single outdoor outlet. They've been through two winters and one of them has a wasp nest in it, which I consider a design success.

Lessons learned

  • Practice soldering on scrap before touching the real piece
  • Patina solution works fast — apply in thin coats
  • Run wire through posts before they go up, not after
